Join local artist Peta Kishawi for this foundational workshop. Perfect for newcomers and young artists, as well as those looking to reconnect with their craft, participants will be taken through a series of illustration exercises exploring storytelling through simplification, exaggeration, and imagination.
The exercises will encompass the key techniques of story-driven illustration with a focus on character design. To achieve this, we will:
Discover the importance of mindset.
-
Learn how to integrate an effective workflow in your practice.
-
Encourage a non-critical process.
-
Align your skills with your vision and learn to appreciate what emerges from the gaps in-between.
Move from observation to imagination and back again!
-
Learn how to ‘see’ with the goal to ‘know.’
-
Uncover stylisation and simplification.
-
Utilise strong shape language to elevate key features.
Draw from your own memory and experience.
-
Learn how to utilise personal connection and authenticity.
-
Discover how your preferences, experiences and habits influence the identity of your work.
Participants will finish the workshop with a series of experimental sketches and a final pen and ink illustration. This session will have a focus on using line and tone on paper, however the concepts can be applied using any drawing medium. You are welcome to bring your own equipment. There will also be pencils, pens and paper available to use if you wish.
